Is it worth going to Khao Lak? ›

Khao Lak is a small seaside town and is considered to be one of the most popular tourist hubs in Phang Nga due to its close proximity to beautiful snorkeling and diving spots like Similan and Surin as well as some of the prettiest islands in Thailand like Phi Phi Islands and Phang Nga Bay.

The name "Khao Lak" literally translated means 'Main Mountain'. This was one of the peaks used by ancient sea farers as a landmark to guide them into the safe harbor at Thaplamu.

This area may be too quiet if you are travelling with children, but it is a great choice for couples. Wherever you choose to base yourself in Khao Lak you can expect a wonderful beach holiday.

Khao Lak is world renowned as a scuba diving mecca; with its beautiful coral reefs, and rich marine life, not to mention being the nearest port to the amazing Similan Islands, it has been pulling divers in from all over the world for years.

Because of Phuket having lots of sordid nightlife and Khao Lak being far more laid back, each place attracts a certain type of tourist. Khao Lak is better for couples, families & divers in general. Khao Lak has lots of restaurants which include all tastes and budget levels.

The peak season in Khao Lak is between November and February when the climate is drier and slightly cooler, making this the best time to visit for sunshine, water activities and beach weather.

From Phuket airport to Khao Lak is about 100 km (approximately 1.5 hour by car or 2.5 hours by bus).

Krabi International Airport: Khao Lak is about 120 km south from Krabi International Airport and takes about two hours to get there by car.

Whether you are seeking a bustling beach with lots of things to do, a quiet retreat from civilisation, or a picture-perfect spot to sunbathe and swim, Khao Lak is in no shortage of beaches to give you the perfect tropical Thai getaway.

There is of course a bit of petty crime here and there, but mostly it is isolated incidents and it vary rarely affects tourists. There is much less crime here than in the bigger towns like Phuket, Pattaya or Bangkok.

Sea snakes, leopard sharks and reef sharks can be spotted whilst diving in Khao Lak all year. Encounters with manta rays and whale sharks are especially good during the months of February to April. The National Marine Park for the Similan and Surin Island is open for divers from early November to mid-May.

Over the time that I have been exploring the lesser known areas of Khao Lak, I have come across wild snakes on several occasions. The main thing to remember is to be aware that they are there. Keep your eyes open and try not to disturb them.

The quickest way to get from Phuket Airport (HKT) to Khao Lak is to taxi which costs ฿2400 - ฿2900 and takes 1h 2m.

It is almost 800 kilometers (approximately 480 miles) from Bangkok to Khao Lak so getting to this beautiful stretch of coastline is not the fastest journey you will ever take.

The beaches of Khao Lak, Thailand were struck by a tsunami 2-3 hours after the magnitude 9.0 earthquake of December 26, 2004. Although 500 km away from the epicenter, the waves were 10 meters (33 feet) high.

The system is designed to give at least a one hour warning prior to the tsunami reaching land. In a landmark first step towards the Indian Ocean project, the USA and NOAA donated under a memorandum of understanding the first Dart II buoy system to Thailand.

I would recommend 5 nights, to give yourself time to explore the amazing Phang Nga bay, Khao Sok National Park and at least one of Similan or Surin Islands – each of those is a full-day trip in itself. So 5 days in Khao Lak would still only leave you with 1 or 2 days to just relax and explore!

Whitetip reef sharks are rarely aggressive towards humans, though they may investigate swimmers closely. However, spear fishers are at risk of being bitten by one attempting to steal their catch. Attacks on surfers and swimmers are most common in 6 to 10 feet of water, according to the museum. The second and third most common depths for these kinds of attacks are 11 to 20 feet and zero to 5 feet, respectively.

Presumably these searchers are checking up to see if their tropical holiday in Thailand is going to be cut short by a great white shark attack off the beach at Phuket or maybe while scuba diving in the Similan Islands. The short answer is: no, there are no great white sharks in Thailand.

Just ask the staff at the 199 emergency hotline. On average, they say, they get a call for assistance with snakes every 15 minutes, with about 60,000 snake removals taking place each year.

A taxi ride from the airport to Khao San Road should cost around 350 – 400 baht. But if you are alone, then Bangkok airport bus will be much better choice for you. At the airport just look for the bus S1.

However, if you are one who loves to shop on their holiday escapades, then the best time to visit Khao San Road would effectively be from 6 P.M. to 8 P.M. During these hours the local vendors and shop owners are at their busiest and would be happy to sell you the best of their products at a bargained rate.
